So I’m 16 and I joined an online dating thing for teens and young adults just to try it out. On my profile I accidentally said I was 18 not 16 and I got a lot of messages from older guys (19-24). This led me to meet one guy who turned out to be really cool. He is 22 though. I told him I was 16 and he said that’s fine, we can just be friends. So we’ve been talking for a while now and I’m kind of worried. We’ve definitely made a connection and what if he wants to take our friendship further? He seems like a totally nice guy but there is definitely a red flag going off because he is older than I am and we did meet online. I don’t want him to end up being the "nice guy" who rapes me in the end. If he really is the guy he says he is then I think he’s awesome! But you really never know with the internet.

So I searched this online and people say it’s a good idea to meet up but bring a friend in a public place. I would do this but I’m honestly a little embarrassed to say I went on an online dating sight. I actually ended up deleting my account because of how stupid it was but I’m still in contact with the 22 year old.

i met this girl online…we’ve been talking since earlier this month…we really like each other however we never met each other face to face…despite that, we planned on meeting in my hometown during the 4th of july weekend…now im not a guy that will do anything to put a woman in danger (im 23 and she’s 20 by the way), im very respectful towards girls, im a very nice guy, i know not to share any personal info (such as financial stuff, etc) to her, i plan on meeting her at a public place and stuff like that…however she lives 8 hours from me and i feel like that meeting half way would be a waste of time…im planing on getting a hotel just down the street from my home and we plan on paying half and half of the hotel bill….what i am going to do tonight is that im going to make SUPER sure that she still wants to this (she did agree to do this before but i still want to make sure she still want to do this) and that she feels very comfortable about doing this…i just don’t want this to be a one sided thing where when we do see each other face to face, i may feel good and want to do all kind things for her while she’s feeling very uncomfortable…for now until that time comes, im going to continue to call and instant message her like we been doing…getting to know her a whole lot better…the main thing i want from you all is your takes on online dating safety…what should i do if we still plan on meeting each other next month…mean i look forward of meeting her but i also want to make sure that we are both safe and stuff…

Your personal safety must always be your top priority in any dating situation, online or offline, for males or females, younger or older.

Most online dating services do not really adequately pre-screen their users – not like government agencies for example.  Thus they cannot assure you that the people you meet through their sites are safe enough to be dealt with.  So, you must take the initiative here and call the shots when it comes to screening them.

Here are a few tips to make online dating less risky while still making it fun:

* Maintain certain anonymity for awhile.  In your first few emails do not communicate any identifying information by giving your home address, place of work, phone number, personal url or real email address.  Remove your signature file or make sure it has no identifying information.

*Request a photo.  It’s hard to give an excuse for not scanning and emailing a scanned photo.

* Rely on common sense.  Rely on your gut instincts.  Online intimacy can be very dangerous.  If your instinct tells you that someone is lying then there is a risk that this may be so.  Move on and find someone that deserves your trust.

* Make a phone call first.  Communication can be easily gauged through a phone call.  This may cost but it is worth it rather than risk meeting someone who is not what they seem.  Even here, use a cell-phone or a pay phone instead of using your land line.

* Unless you are absolutely comfortable with the person you are calling, don’t give your home phone number until you are.

* Delay the first meeting.  Take your time and get to know the person as much as possible before agreeing to a face to face meeting.  Look out for over-compliments and insincerity.  Don’t feel obligated, you still have the last say as to whether you are ready to meet up or not.  If anything feels not right you are perfectly free to change your mind.

* Watch out for signs of intense frustration, “bottling up”, anger or any displays of aggression to you or even the doorman. If you feel you are being put under any pressure, stop the contact.  You do not want to fall for a psycho.

* Before meeting your online friend in the flesh (offline), tell someone you trust where you will go and when you will return.  Give that person your date‘s name and phone number.  Bring your cell phone.  Don’t allow your date to pick you up at home.  Make your own transport arrangements and meet somewhere public.  Don’t leave your drink unattended, ever!  After the date, leave on your own too.

To make online dating work, it is a must that you be extremely careful without seeming too timid.  You should always have ample time to get to know the other person.  Don’t feel rushed, ever.  It’s better to be safe and dateless for a time than sorry.
